FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What is the difference between SCDF 995 and Private Ambulance?

SCDF 995 Emergency Ambulance

  • For life‑threatening emergencies
  • Examples: cardiac arrest, stroke, severe breathing difficulty, major trauma, unconsciousness
  • Operated by Singapore Civil Defence Force
  • Conveys to the nearest appropriate public hospital
  • Strictly reserved for true emergencies

Private Ambulance Service

  • For non‑emergency, planned, or medically supervised transport
  • Suitable for stable patients (appointments, dialysis, transfers, discharges)
  • Can be pre‑booked or urgently requested, subject to availability
  • Allows conveyance to a hospital of choice (if clinically suitable)
  • Fees apply

Summary:
Call 995 for life‑threatening emergencies.
Use a private ambulance for planned or non‑emergency medical transport.

A medical emergency is a life‑threatening condition requiring immediate medical attention.

Examples include:

  • Unconsciousness or unresponsiveness
  • Cardiac arrest or severe chest pain
  • Difficulty or stopped breathing
  • Severe or uncontrolled bleeding
  • Stroke symptoms (facial droop, weakness, slurred speech)
  • Seizures or fits
  • Major trauma or severe burns

Use 995 only for true emergencies, as misuse may delay care for critical patients.

Private ambulances can convey patients to public or private hospitals.
Before booking, we recommend:

  • Informing the hospital of the patient’s condition
  • Confirming acceptance by the hospital
  • Completing any required pre‑registration

If the patient’s condition becomes critical, the ambulance crew may divert to the nearest hospital for stabilization.

Yes.

  • Non‑emergency services: medical appointments, dialysis, transfers, discharges, mobility‑impaired patients
  • Emergency services: MOH‑compliant emergency ambulances
  • Conveyance to a hospital of choice, subject to clinical suitability

Bookings available via MHG’s 24/7 operations centre

MHG mainly operates emergency‑equipped ambulances to ensure patient safety if conditions change during transport.

  • This does not affect charges
  • Billing is based on the service booked, not the vehicle type
  • Advance bookings: Preferred date and time subject to availability
  • Urgent requests: Typically, 30–45 minutes, depending on traffic and availability
  • Any delays will be communicated promptly

Coverage depends on your insurance policy terms.

  • Patients must check eligibility directly with their insurer
  • MHG can provide an itemized invoice and service documents to support claims
