Child First Aid Refresher
Child First Aid topics will be embedded into the Standard First Aid Course Syllabus and further enhanced with BCLS + AED Course content.
This course is accredited by SRFAC and aims to provide participants with knowledge & techniques to recognise and mitigate injuries and medical emergencies like severe breathing difficulties and bleedings not only in adult casualties but also that in children and infants. Participants who successfully complete the course will receive 3 certifications – in BCLS+AED, SFA, CFA – each valid for two years.
Participants are required to have a valid Child First Aid Certificate to be able to participate in this refresher course.

Child First Aid course is a compulsory course for childcare and preschool professionals under the Early Childhood Development Agency’s licensing framework.
The goal of this course is to provide relevant knowledge and skills in rendering first aid treatment to a child, toddler or infant during any emergency at the childcare centre or preschool.
The course syllabus has been updated as of 1st June 2020. Learners will now attain 3 different first aid certifications upon completion of this course.

- Able to speak, read and understand English effectively as our courses are conducted in English.
- Participants are required to have a valid Child First Aid Certificate to be able to participate in this refresher course.
Course Objectives
This course provides the relevant knowledge and skills needed to first aid to an adult, a child or infant during any medical emergency that might arise at the childcare, pre-school centres or even at home.
- Provide learners with safety information and standards for children and infants in Singapore
- Prepare learners with the necessary skills in identifying, planning and managing a medical emergency at home or in school
- Equip learners with the skills in rendering first aid for injuries and medical emergencies arising from common accidents among infants, children and adults
- Equip learners with the skills in providing effective resuscitation (CPR) to an adult, child and an infant during medical emergencies
Course Content
- Identify a medical emergency that involves children and infants
- Bring to action the proper emergency response approach, following the Emergency Action Principles
- Accomplish the required and proper first-aid treatment to a child or infant with regards to their injuries
- Execute CPR on children and infants during an emergency when the situation calls for it
- Accomplish the required and proper first-aid treatment for Foreign Body Airway Obstruction on children and infants

Who is eligible?
Singaporeans and Permanent Residents (PRs) above the age of 21 are eligible for Skillsfuture Funding (SSG). The funding amount is between 50-70% of course fees (before GST), depending on age.
Trainees have to fulfill the following criterias to successfully receive the funding. Otherwise, Medlink Healthcare Group (MHG) reserves the right to claw back the funded amount from the trainee if trainee did not meet the funding criteria.
- Trainee must achieve at least 75% attendance
- Trainee must pass all assessments and attain 100% competency
How Does It Work?

Each learner will be assessed based on their competencies in 2 key components: theory and practice.
THEORY ASSESSMENTS
(3 attempts allowed) - 1 hours
This assessment comes with 50 multiple choice questions. The questions are broken down into:
Child First Aid - 10 questions
Standard First Aid - 20 questions
Basic Cardiac Life Support +
Automated External Defibrillator (BCLS + AED) - 20 questions
Practical Assessments
(3 attempts allowed) - 4 hours
For practical assessment, learners will undergo scenario-based tests. This is to ensure that they are able to carry out the necessary first-aid steps across multiple medical emergency scenarios.
In order to pass the practical assessment, 100% score is required.

CHILD FIRST AID PROVIDER
BASIC CARDIAC LIFE SUPPORT + AUTOMATED EXTERNAL DEFIBRILATOR (BCLS + AED) PROVIDER
This course is accredited by the Singapore Resuscitation and First Aid Council (SRFAC) and Early Childhood and Development Agency. The certification is valid for 2 years. Results will be released on the day of training or after 2 working days after the course ends. “A pass (credit card size) of achievement will be issued to all participants after the release of the results.

First-Aid Child Requirement for Setting Up Early Childhood Development Centre (ECDC)
When applying for a child centre, the Principal/Key Personnel plus two (2) programme staff must all hold valid Child First Aid (CFA) certifications. This certificate must be accredited by the National Resuscitation and First Aid Council. The Key Personnel is a part of the centre staff that assumes leadership roles and makes important decisions for the Principal. In centres that attend to more than 150 children at any given time, an additional staff may be required for every 50 children. The additional staff must also secure a valid CFA certification as a requirement.
Staff-to-Child Ratio Requirement for Children Above 18 months to 6 years old
There must be enough staff present in the centre during programme and non-programme hours. This table indicates the ideal ratio of staff to children, in relation to the age groups. For Class B Licence, the programme hours run from 9 am to 5 pm. Non-programme hours are from 7 am to 9 am and 5 pm to 7 pm.

Additional Requirements
The centre must have at least 2 staff members present during non-programme hours, wherein one is a programme staff. It is required that at least one of these staff members has a valid CFA certificate. In mixed-age groups, the staff-to-child ratio must comply towards the requirement for the youngest child that belongs to the group.

Staff-to Child Requirements for Class A Licence
For ECDCs that provide infant services, the centre must have the ideal programme staff-to-infant ratio especially within operational hours which is from 7 am to 7 pm. At least 2 programme staff members must be present at all times, wherein one must be an Infant Educarer. Moreover, at least one staff member must hold a CFA certification that is approved by the National Resuscitation & First Aid Council. A fundamental caregiving system must be established to ensure constant support and balanced care for the infants.

What is the class size?
According to SRFAC, the class size will be capped at 16 learners per class. Whereas for practical sessions involving CPR and AED topics, the Instructor-to-Manikin-to-Learner ratio is 1:1:4.

How long does it take to complete the Child First Aid certification?
In general, each learner can complete the course in 20 hours. For Child First Aid Blended Course, the theory content will be delivered via e-learning, therefore, there will be a slight variation in terms of the number of hours it takes to complete.
